The paddle seems to be very much the preferred implement in USA schools. When did it first come into widespread use? I am particularly interested in early mentions of the school paddle in dated factual or fictional literature, and in official documents.

Have other cultures used the paddle in schools?

The incident, as reported, does not make sense. Guesses based on logic are therefore unlikely to be successful. They haven’t been so far.

The photo of the judge holding the paddle shows a paddle that appears much thinner than that reported in the accompanying article. We all came up with rather similar estimates of its size, a rather short device and NOT unusually thick.

The information I have supplied until now is insufficient to allow the “correct” answer to be calculated.

The difficulties have been greatly compounded by my sloppy arithmetic, and transcription / typo errors in my replies. (I did not keep my calculations so am at lost to know what happened.)

I provided additional info (a photo) after Bob T attempted an answer. It is up to competitors to judge the age of the boy in the hyperlinked image, and how much if any notice to take of the file name. Some may wish to speculate on whether the boy might be a malingerer or his dad prone to vendetta but I caution against this.

Recalculated ESS, SUM((Reported-Suggested)^2), values are as follows:

Bob T   78
Bob T  108
Debbie 50
EAL     38

It is clear that the paddle was used in Los Angeles in 1915 and that news reports and discussions of reports can be unreliable.

Congratulations EAL!

The paddle was reported to be one and a half inches thick although it certainly does not look so in the photo. The boy was reported to be bruised “about the spine”. Possibly, his tail bone was broken although 10 days in bed still seems over the top. Newspaper interest seemed to be more because celebs were involved rather than from concern about school CP.

For details, search here: http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc? using appropriate search terms. You should get a lot of hits.

Hello KK,

Interesting. The tailbone if fractured can be serious. In the worst cases it can lead very rarely to paralysis. This is why you must NEVER paddle ‘high’. Here is the general medical treatment for a less serious fracture /sprain. You will note the long suggested recovery periods.

Debbie, I have added a scale to the following drawing in the hope that it will help you to specify the preferred target zone for safety and efficacy. The horizontal lines are numbered from 0 to 10, starting at the top.

The bruise allegedly suffered at Nottingham Middle School in Dayton TX does not impress as a serious wound. However, for reasons of decency, we are not allowed to see the intended target which is said to have been extensively bruised.

We do see an x-ray of the dislocated coccyx, an alarming sight and a private part not normally shown. Personally, I would very much prefer to have my posterior rather than my face (and name) shown on the news and the Internet.

One inch is much too thick for any paddle. Such a paddle is bound to cause unacceptable injury if laid on with any force and especially so if it lands high or on a poorly padded posterior. There is absolutely no need for a paddle of this thickness. CP implements must be of a design and weight that cannot cause serious injury if ineptly or over enthusiastically applied – if they are to be used at all.

A_L good catch but have a heart and cut me some slack in the Christmas spirit. Theodore was 19 and the paddling occurred two years before when he would have been around 17. But you’re right, it wasn’t he who was paddled. Theodore could have been a year younger. My good catch was pretty girls for I always have my eyes out for them.
